The Service Enterprise Initiative (SEI) is a national initiative led by Points of Light, the world's largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. It began as a partnership between California Volunteers and Reimagining Service to strengthen the capacity of nonprofits to fundamentally leverage volunteers and their skills to address community needs. Through a comprehensive research-based assessment, training, consulting, and certification model, selected nonprofits are equipped with the tools and technical assistance necessary to support nonprofit Service Enterprise transformations.
In 2014, Wisconsin participated in the national pilot of the SEI. To date, four Wisconsin nonprofits have been certified as Service Enterprise organizations, which means that they fundamentally leverage volunteers and their skills across all levels of the organization to successfully deliver on their social mission. SEI organizations are more adaptable, sustainable, and capable of scaling their impact in comparison to peer organizations. Research shows that these organizations operate at almost half the median budget as their peers.
The research-based initiative in Wisconsin is sponsored by a Volunteer Generation Fund (VGF) grant through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), and led by the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee.
